How to get that sunkissed glow without damaging your skin

Warm weather, sunshine, flowers blooming. Spring is finally here!
Now we can finally get rid of that dull winter tone and get a beautiful sunkissed glow.

But along with the perfect tan comes hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and skin cancer. This doesn’t mean you have to hide inside all spring and summer, but it’s important to be mindful of the effects sun exposure can have and take the necessary precautions to protect your skin.

Let’s run through all the tips you’ll need this summer to be beautifully bronzed and healthy.

Apply and reapply sunscreen- This is the most important tip you can get. And while you probably already apply sunscreen when you’re sitting out at the pool all day or lounging on the beach, you should be wearing it any time that you’re in the sun.

That includes the next soccer game, when you’re standing outside at the bus stop waiting for your kids, or even when you’re driving in the car. Opt for a sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 30 and also has zinc for maximum protection against harmful UV rays.

Toss the oil– Tanning oils are worse than wearing nothing at all. They accelerate the tanning process, consequently speeding up aging. These heightened effects of the sun result in dehydration of the skin, leaving behind lines and wrinkles. So skip the oils and opt for sunscreen instead. This will allow some bronzing to occur without concentrating UV effects and damaging your skin.

Try self tanner– Self tanner can give you that glow you want without any of the damage. These bronzing lotions will give you beautiful sun kissed skin for 5-7 days, naturally fading as your skin exfoliates away.

When applying, make sure your exfoliate your skin beforehand to ensure you get smooth even coverage without any streaking. Apply in sections, and be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after each section. Tanner can collect in between fingers, staining unwanted skin and revealing the fact that didn’t just get back from vacation!

Make sure you blend the lotion around your wrists and ankles, and give your skin plenty of time to dry before getting dressed.

Don’t forget your eyes and lips– Our eyes are one of the first places that start to show signs of aging. And if you’re out in the sun without sunglasses, all that squinting will turn into crows feet. Make sure you buy a pair of glasses that are labeled to block 99 percent of UV rays, and the bigger the frames the more protection, so go for those movie star shades!

Lips are another area that is easy to forget when applying sunscreen. This thin skin can easily burn without protection, causing lip lines and wrinkles. Buy a chapstick that contains SPF and reapply frequently (especially if there’s a margarita in the mix!)
